Episode 1 – A DIY Celebration at House on the Brooks
Honest reflections, heartfelt advice, and unforgettable moments—straight from the couples themselves
Welcome to the first post in my new Q&A series, where I sit down with couples after their wedding to reflect on their planning journey, photography experience, and the moments that made their day unforgettable.
Each couple brings a unique story, and through their words, I hope to offer insight, inspiration, and a glimpse into what it’s really like to work together.

Photographer's Note
Some couples leave a lasting impression—and this was one of them. From our very first call, we built a trust-based relationship that made the entire process feel effortless. They were open to every creative idea I suggested, and that freedom allowed us to capture some truly meaningful memories. Their couple photos turned out beautifully natural, joyful, and full of real emotion. And the party? Absolutely electric. Their friends brought incredible energy, and it was clear how loved and celebrated they were.

Venue Spotlight
Wedding location
This couple chose House on the Brooks, a charming self-catering venue nestled in the South Downs National Park. With its rustic interiors, flexible accommodation options, and open countryside views, it’s a dream location for couples looking to create a relaxed, personal celebration. Their wedding was entirely DIY—planned remotely while living abroad—and brought together guests from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Australia, Scotland, and the US.
Q&A section
Planning the wedding
What was your overall experience planning your wedding?
We had a nice run-up and started planning a year and a half in advance. Although we were doing it remotely, it was still an enjoyable and exciting experience.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while planning your wedding?
Planning everything from overseas was the most challenging. We had to rely on Google searches, social media, and previous reviews.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently with your wedding photography experience?
No, nothing. Everything was perfect!
Choosing their photographer
What qualities were most important to you when choosing a wedding photographer?
Photography style, value for money, and communication.
What initially drew you to Alex’s work?
We liked his style and the way he captured “real” emotion.
How did Alex help you feel comfortable and relaxed during the wedding day?
I think because we had so many calls during the planning stage and were able to meet him before the big day, it felt like he was no longer a stranger and more a friend. We could be our complete selves in front of him.
The photography Experience
What surprised you the most about working with a wedding photographer on your wedding day?
Nothing we can think of. The communication and planning were so organised—we knew from both sides what we wanted and what was going to happen.
What are some of your favourite photos from the wedding, and why?
A very hard question to answer, as we love every single one! But we love the candid shots of all our guests during the speeches—he captured the real energy. We also love all of our couple shots. Not one of them looks staged, just natural, laughing, and full of real love.
How important do you think wedding photography is in capturing the memories of your special day?
Extremely important! The excitement on the day makes it go so fast. Having someone capture every moment is a way you can always relive it.
Did you have any specific requests or preferences for your wedding photos?
Not really. We asked for natural, candid, and humorous shots—and that’s exactly what we got!
How did you incorporate your personalities into your wedding photography?
We allowed Alex to capture our “silly side” and “party side.”
Final thoughts
Would you recommend Alex to other couples getting married? Why or why not?
Yes, 1 million percent! From the initial conversation right up to this point, everything has been perfect. The communication has been outstanding. He is friendly and professional. He went above and beyond in every aspect and we would definitely recommend. Also—we’ve received so many compliments from our guests from the big day and even more now that we have received our photos!
What advice would you give other couples when it comes to choosing a wedding photographer?
Try and create a good rapport with your photographer. Let them see your personality before the big day. This will help achieve the wedding photography experience you are wanting!

Candid getting ready
Grace and Simon’s wedding morning unfolded beautifully at The House on the Brooks, a stunning countryside venue in Sussex that blends rustic charm with peaceful surroundings. As a Sussex wedding photographer, it was a joy to capture these quiet, intimate moments before the celebrations began. The farmhouse buzzed softly with excitement — in one room, Grace and her bridesmaids shared laughter and final touches, while in another, Simon and his groomsmen enjoyed a relaxed start to the day. The warm light pouring through the wooden-framed windows, the textured walls, and the calm atmosphere made this part of their House on the Brooks wedding feel timeless. It was the perfect setting to document those candid, emotional getting-ready moments that set the tone for everything that followed.

First look
The morning’s first look moments began outdoors at The House on the Brooks, surrounded by soft countryside light. Grace stepped out to find her bridesmaids waiting, and their reactions were instant — laughter, tears, and pure joy as they saw her in her dress for the first time. Soon after, her dad stood with his back turned as Grace walked towards him, holding her dress gently. When he turned around, his face lit up with pride and emotion. These candid, heartfelt moments are some of my favourites to capture as a Sussex wedding photographer.

emotional ceremony
The outdoor ceremony at The House on the Brooks was full of love, laughter, and heartfelt moments. Grace and Simon were married by their friend and best man, which made the day feel even more personal and intimate. As they exchanged vows, the air was filled with emotion, smiles, and a few happy tears from everyone present. After the “I dos,” the confetti celebration captured the couple’s sheer joy perfectly — Simon screamed with excitement, fist pumping into the sky, while Grace threw her bouquet up with a radiant smile. These playful, candid moments are always my favourite to photograph, full of energy, love, and genuine emotion. Being a Sussex wedding photographer, it’s a joy to document days like this, where every detail and every reaction tells the story of the couple’s happiness and connection in such a beautiful outdoor setting.

Sunset couple portraits
After the ceremony, Grace and Simon took a quiet walk around the beautiful grounds of The House on the Brooks. With stunning countryside views and soft golden light, it was the perfect setting for their couples portraits. We explored the rustic bridges, pathways, and open fields, capturing relaxed, natural moments between them. These photos reflect their connection and the charm of this West Sussex wedding venue.

Speeches
The speeches took place inside the tipi set outside at The House on the Brooks, filled with laughter, a few happy tears, and plenty of heartfelt moments. Friends and family shared stories that had everyone smiling, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere. It was the perfect backdrop to capture candid reactions and emotional storytelling during this West Sussex wedding.

Dance floor energy
Grace and Simon’s first dance was a romantic and beautiful moment — the barn lights glowed softly as they held each other close, surrounded by their loved ones. It set the perfect tone for the celebrations that followed.
Once the music picked up, the dance floor came alive — guests were dancing, singing, and cheering all night. It was a vibrant, joy-filled party that perfectly ended their wedding day. These candid moments captured the fun, laughter, and unforgettable atmosphere of their West Sussex wedding.

Closing words
This couple’s wedding was a celebration of love, laughter, and the power of personal touches. Their photography experience was built on trust, connection, and a shared vision—and the result was a gallery of memories that felt as real and joyful as the day itself.
If you’re planning your own wedding and looking for a photographer who will honour your story, embrace your quirks, and capture the moments that matter most—I’d love to hear from you.
